THE DAMON SYSTEM

ABOUT THE DAMON SYSTEM

What is the Damon System?

The Damon System, invented by Dr. Dwight Damon, is used by orthodontists worldwide. Damon braces are smaller, making them easier to clean and less noticeable. The system aims to make the experience with braces manageable and not interfere with your lifestyle. Damon System braces can reduce treatment time and have been clinically proven to avoid expanders, headgear and extractions. They offer many advantages, with the most important being the provision of a beautiful smile.

The Damon bracket system utilises a unique passive self-ligating bracket and light forces to achieve exceptional results. Treatment with the Damon System is now less time-consuming and more comfortable than ever before. The system offers two options: metal brackets and aesthetic brackets. You will see the beginnings of your new smile in the first few weeks of treatment and, in the end, will have a lasting great smile.

How does it work?

The Damon system is a self-ligating brace system .Traditional orthodontic therapy involves tying archwires into braces with coloured elastics or small stainless steel wires. This can bind up the archwire and cause the teeth to move at a slower rate. Heavy forces must be applied to overcome inherent friction in the traditional bracket system. These heavy forces can overpower or crush the delicate underlying blood vessels, cutting off oxygen and nutrients. This can be more painful, slowing down tooth movement and lengthening the treatment time.

Damon braces take a completely different approach, with a patented built-in sliding door that holds the wire, allowing it to move more freely to straighten your teeth. This approach uses very gentle pressure, working with the natural forces of your body, resulting in faster treatment with gentler forces.

  • Pre-Treatment Phase

The pre-treatment phase typically begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s oral health, including x-rays, photographs, and a scan of the teeth. We take the time to explain the proposed treatment plan in detail, discussing the various stages of braces treatment, the expected duration of treatment, and the types of braces that may be recommended. Patients also have the opportunity to ask questions and express any preferences they may have regarding their orthodontic treatment. Our team is committed to ensuring that patients feel empowered and informed throughout the entire process, from the initial consultation to the completion of treatment.

  • Placement Phase

This phase marks the official start of orthodontic treatment and involves the actual placement of braces onto the teeth. The process typically begins with thorough cleaning and drying of the teeth to ensure that the bonding materials adhere properly. Next, each bracket is carefully positioned on the surface of the teeth, and a special dental adhesive is used to bond the brackets in place. Once all of the brackets have been attached, then Gavin will secure the archwire onto the brackets. This archwire exerts gentle pressure on the teeth, gradually guiding them into their desired positions over time.We understand that this phase can be a significant milestone for many patients, and we strive to provide a supportive and positive experience every step of the way.

  • Adjustment Phase

This involves regular visits for adjustments and monitoring of progress. This phase is crucial for ensuring that the braces are working effectively and that the teeth are moving according to the treatment plan. During each adjustment appointment, Gavin will make any necessary changes to the braces, such as tightening the archwire or replacing elastic bands. This helps to maintain consistent pressure on the teeth, which is essential for achieving optimal results. Throughout this phase, patients may experience some discomfort or soreness after adjustments, but this is normal and usually subsides within a few days. Our team will provide guidance on how to manage any discomfort. The adjustment phase typically continues for several months, depending on the complexity of the case. During this time, patients will gradually see their teeth move into their desired positions, leading to a beautiful and functional smile.

  • Finalisation Phase & Retention

This phase is all about fine-tuning the results achieved during the previous stages and ensuring that the teeth are in their optimal positions.  Gavin may make some final adjustments to the braces to perfect the alignment of the teeth and bite and will also evaluate the overall health of the teeth and gums to ensure that they are in excellent condition. This may involve performing a thorough cleaning and polishing of the teeth. Once Gavin is satisfied with the results and the teeth are in their ideal positions, the braces will be removed.  The patient will then be fitted with a retainer to help maintain the new position of their teeth and instructions will be provided on how to care for the retainer and how often to wear it to ensure that the results of treatment are maintained over the long term. Retainers are custom-made devices that are designed to hold the teeth in their new positions. They are typically made of clear plastic or wire and are worn over the teeth, usually at night, to help prevent them from moving.

GENERAL FAQs

When Is The Best Time To Begin Orthodontics?

Although Gavin can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time period to begin treatment. Beginning treatment at this time ensures the best result and the shortest treatment.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but careful examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.

What Are The Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Evaluation?

Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, Gavin can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.

Why Is Age 7 Considered The Optimal Time For Screening?

By the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, an evaluation of front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships can be made.

For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding, or excessive spacing. Timely screening increases the possibility of achieving an incredible smile.

What Happens at the Initial Examination Appointment?

At the initial examination appointment, each patient and parent will be greeted by Gavin for the orthodontic consultation. He will take necessary photographs, impressions, and radiographs to make a proper diagnosis.

Gavin will then complete a thorough exam. After careful consideration a detailed treatment plan outlining the planned course of treatment and the costs will be presented to the patient.

What are the advantages of interceptive treatment?

Some direct results of interceptive treatment include:

  • Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Creating facial symmetry and influencing favorable facial bone growth and proportions
  • Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Preserving space for unerupted teeth
  • Reducing the need for removal of permanent teeth
  • Reducing treatment time with braces

How important are retainers?

Retainers are essential for ensuring the long-term stability of the results achieved with braces. It’s crucial for patients to follow the instructions carefully during the retention phase to ensure that the results of their treatment are maintained over the long term. Failure to wear retainers as directed can lead to relapse, where the teeth begin to shift back towards their original positions. This can undo the results achieved with braces and may require additional orthodontic treatment to correct.
